Flight Info: Expected arrival at Xining Caojiabao Airport at 16:15.
1. Airport Car Pickup (16:45 - 17:30)
- Pickup Process: After collecting luggage, head to the airport rental center (usually inside the terminal or via free shuttle).
- Vehicle Inspection Checklist:
- Infotainment Test: Connect your data cable immediately to test if Apple CarPlay wakes up properly, ensuring navigation and audio work smoothly.
- Exterior & Tire Pressure: Record a video of the car's exterior for your records; check tire pressure and wear, as Northwest road conditions are demanding on tires.
- Familiarize Controls: Get comfortable with cruise control/adaptive cruise control, as you will use these frequently on long drives.
- Tool Check: Check onboard tools (jack, wrench, warning triangle) and confirm fuel level against the rental contract.
2. Dinner Suggestion (18:30 - 20:30)
- Route: Xining Airport ➔ Xining City (approx. 30 km, ~40 min drive).
- Local Specialties:
- Gazhangwa Intangible Cultural Heritage BBQ: A popular spot for locals; the lamb is fresh and lacks a gamey taste.
- Kangguo Lamb Chops: A Northwest specialty where lamb chops are roasted in an iron pan with potatoes, onions, and other vegetables. It's very flavorful and a great way to replenish energy.
- Gazhangwa Intangible Cultural Heritage BBQ: A popular spot for locals; the lamb is fresh and lacks a gamey taste.
3. Supply Run (20:30 - 22:00)
- Supplies: Before or after checking into your hotel, find a convenience store or supermarket to buy 1-2 cases of mineral water for the trunk. The Northwest climate is extremely dry, and you will need to hydrate frequently while driving.
4. Accommodation
- Recommended Hotel: Sofitel Xining
- Note: Xining is at an altitude of about 2,200 meters, which is a mild high-altitude environment. On the first night, it is recommended to avoid long, hot showers, get to bed early, and avoid alcohol and strenuous exercise to let your body adapt to the altitude.
🗓️ Day 2 (May 10): Cruising by Qinghai Lake, visiting Chaka in the evening
1. Breakfast (08:30 - 09:30)
- Recommendation: Find a local Halal beef noodle shop near the hotel. Order a bowl of authentic lamian with extra meat and an egg; it's the classic Northwest breakfast for a long drive, providing lasting energy.
2. Drive to Qinghai Lake (09:30 - 13:00)
- Route: Xining City ➔ Jingzang Expressway (G6) ➔ G109 National Highway ➔ Qinghai Lake South Route (approx. 150 km, ~2.5 hour drive).
- Driving Tip: G109 is a two-way, single-lane road with many heavy trucks. Leave enough safe distance when overtaking and watch for oncoming traffic. The scenery is stunning, but drivers must stay focused.
3. Lakeside Scenery & Lunch (13:00 - 15:30)
- Travel Tip: Avoiding the crowded Erlangjian core scenic area is recommended. Continue driving west along G109; there are many paths created by local herdsmen leading directly to the lake (usually 10-50 RMB/car). You can park in a safe area by the lake to capture photos of Qinghai Lake and the distant snow-capped mountains.
- Lunch: Eat a simple meal in Heimahe Township. Local dining focuses on Sichuan cuisine and noodles; try a bowl of hot yak beef noodles or stewed chicken noodles.
4. Crossing Rubber Mountain, visiting Chaka Salt Lake (15:30 - 19:30)
- Route: Heimahe Township ➔ Rubber Mountain Pass (altitude 3,817m) ➔ Chaka Salt Lake (approx. 80 km, ~1.5 hour drive).
- Travel Tip:
- Entering Chaka Salt Lake after 4 PM offers the softest light and is the best time for reflection photography.
- Take the scenic train into the heart of the salt lake to avoid the crowds at the entrance.
- Prepare a tripod and a polarizing filter; on a clear, windless day, you can capture the pure "Mirror of the Sky" reflection effect.
- Dress warmly, as the wind is usually strong and temperatures are low in the afternoon.
5. Dinner & Accommodation (After 19:30)
- Dinner Recommendation: Chaka Town dining focuses on Qinghai-style hot pot and Sichuan cuisine. Try the local specialty hot pot, stewed with beef, lamb, and vegetables in a copper pot—perfect for warming up.
- Accommodation: Chaka Interstellar Hotel (one of the better-equipped hotels in town) or newly renovated boutique homestays.
- Note: Chaka Town is at an altitude of about 3,050 meters, and nighttime temperatures are low. Ensure your accommodation's AC or heating is working and that hot water is available.
🗓️ Day 3 (May 11): Crossing the Qilian Mountains, visiting Zhuoer Mountain
1. Breakfast & Departure (08:30 - 09:30)
- Breakfast: Eat in Chaka Town; steamed buns and congee or a bowl of lamb offal soup are recommended to warm your stomach.
- Offline Maps: Critical Step! Today's route goes deep into the Qilian Mountains, and some sections (especially near the mountain passes) have no mobile signal. Before leaving, ensure you have downloaded the offline map package for Qinghai Province in your map app (Gaode/Baidu) to ensure navigation doesn't cut out.
2. Entering the "Most Beautiful National Highway" & Lunch (09:30 - 14:00)
- Route: Chaka Town ➔ Huanhu West Road/Gangcha Line ➔ Xihai Town ➔ G227 National Highway (approx. 250 km, ~4 hour drive).
- Road Condition Tip: From Xihai Town, you will enter G227, known as "China's Most Beautiful Landscape Avenue." Expect alpine meadows and herds of cattle and sheep. Please strictly observe speed limits and do not stop randomly on the asphalt road where there is no parking lane just for photos.
- Lunch: Eat in Xihai Town or at a large rest area along the way.
3. Crossing Dazhongshu Mountain Pass (14:00 - 16:00)
- Route: Follow G227 over the Dazhongshu Mountain Pass (altitude 4,120m), then descend to Qilian County (approx. 150 km, ~2.5 hour drive).
- Driving Warning (Hardcore Tip):
- Uphill: Maintain consistent power.
- Downhill: Strictly avoid riding the brakes for long periods on long descents (this can cause brake pads to overheat and fail). Use the gearbox's manual mode (or L gear/Sport mode) to shift into a low gear (e.g., 2nd or 3rd) and use engine braking to control speed.
4. Visiting Zhuoer Mountain (16:00 - 19:30)
- Core Attraction: Upon arriving in Qilian County, head straight to the Zhuoer Mountain scenic area.
- Travel Tip: Zhuoer Mountain is a typical Danxia landform with reddish mountains covered in emerald green meadows, facing the snow-capped Niuxin Mountain. The light around 5 PM is perfect for photography, with extreme contrast between the red, green, and white colors.
5. Dinner & Accommodation (After 19:30)
- Dinner Recommendation: Qilian County specialties include stir-fried yellow mushrooms (a Qilian Mountain specialty, fragrant and rich) and authentic Qilian roasted lamb.
- Accommodation: Qilian Hotel or other highly-rated high-end resort hotels in the county. The altitude drops to around 2,800 meters, so you will feel much more comfortable than in Chaka.
🗓️ Day 4 (May 12): Passing through Biandukou, admiring the Colorful Danxia
1. Breakfast & Leaving Qinghai (09:00 - 12:00)
- Route: Qilian County ➔ Epu Town ➔ Biandukou (approx. 130 km, ~2.5 hour drive).
- Landscape Transition: Today you will officially cross the provincial border. You will pass through Biandukou, an important pass in the Qilian Mountains. As the altitude drops, you will notice the vegetation thinning, and the landscape smoothly transitions from alpine grasslands to the Gobi desert unique to the Northwest.
2. Arriving in Zhangye & Specialty Lunch (12:00 - 14:00)
- Route: Biandukou ➔ Zhangye City (approx. 70 km, ~1.5 hour drive). Zhangye City is at an altitude of about 1,400 meters, a plain environment; altitude sickness concerns are officially over.
- Lunch Recommendation: Zhangye's flour-based dishes are excellent. Highly recommended in the city:
- Chaopao: A specialty noodle dish cut into firecracker shapes, served with braised meat and vegetables; very chewy.
- Cuoyuzi: Noodles that are thick in the middle and pointed at both ends; unique texture.
- Juanzi Chicken: An upgraded version of Dapanji (Big Plate Chicken), where the dough rolls soak up the broth—delicious.
3. Exploring Colorful Danxia (15:30 - 19:30)
- Route: Zhangye City ➔ Zhangye Colorful Danxia Scenic Area (approx. 40 km, ~50 min drive).
- Strategy & Photography Tips:
- Best Time: Do not go at noon (the light is too harsh, and colors will look washed out). From 4 PM until sunset is when the colors are most saturated and vibrant.
- Viewing Platforms: There are multiple shuttle buses between viewing platforms. Platform 4 is usually the best for sunset and panoramic views, with the clearest color textures; Platform 1 is the largest.
- Sun & Dust Protection: The Gobi sun is strong in the afternoon, and it can get windy and dusty. Wear a hat, sunglasses, and a neck gaiter.
4. Dinner & Accommodation (After 20:00)
- Dinner Recommendation: After returning to Zhangye, visit Ganzhou Market (a famous night market) for snacks. Apricot peel tea, BBQ, and milk-egg fermented rice are great desserts.
- Accommodation: Zhangye City. Zhangye Hotel, Huachen International Hotel, or similar high-star hotels are recommended. The city has excellent facilities; enjoy a comfortable hot shower and a good rest tonight.
🗓️ Day 5 (May 13): Crossing the Hexi Corridor, exploring the Mars Camp
1. Breakfast & Highway Prep (08:30 - 09:30)
- Breakfast: Have authentic beef noodles or lamb soup in Zhangye to fuel up for today's long drive.
- Vehicle Check: Since you will be driving on Gobi highways all day, check that your windshield washer fluid is full (insects often hit the windshield in the Gobi) and confirm tire condition.
2. Heading to Jinchang, landing on the "Martian Surface" (09:30 - 12:30)
- Route: Zhangye City ➔ Lianhuo Expressway (G30) ➔ Jinchang "Mars Base 1" (approx. 220 km, ~2.5 hour drive).
- Driving Warning (Crosswinds & Fatigue): This section of the Lianhuo Expressway is extremely straight, surrounded by vast Gobi desert. Strong crosswinds are common; keep a firm grip on the steering wheel. Because the scenery is monotonous, visual fatigue is common. Use CarPlay to play upbeat music and turn on adaptive cruise control (ACC).
- Core Visual: Exit the highway at Jinchang and drive into Mars Base 1. The reddish-brown rock formations here are extremely similar to the surface of Mars, with white simulated space modules standing in the wilderness. It offers a strong sci-fi vibe and surreal visual impact, perfect for hardcore industrial/wasteland-style photos.
3. Lunch & Cross-Province Drive (13:30 - 17:30)
- Lunch: Grab a quick lunch in Jinchang or at a highway service area.
- Route: Jinchang ➔ Dingwu Expressway (G2012) ➔ Zhongwei City, Ningxia (approx. 260 km, ~3 hour drive).
- Landscape Transition: You will officially leave Gansu and enter the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. The Gobi along the way is gradually replaced by sand dunes covered in drought-tolerant plants, signaling your arrival at the edge of the desert.
4. Arriving in Zhongwei & First Ningxia Meal (After 18:00)
- Dinner Recommendation: In Zhongwei, lamb is prepared differently than in Qinghai or Gansu. Highly recommend authentic Ningxia hand-grabbed lamb (chilled or warm, dipped in garlic sauce—the meat is incredibly tender) or Zhongwei Haozi noodles.
- Accommodation: High-end homestays in Zhongwei city or near the Shapotou scenic area. Rest well tonight to prepare for tomorrow's deep desert experience.
🗓️ Day 6 (May 14): Deep into the Tengger Desert, watching the Milky Way
1. Leisurely Morning & Packing (09:00 - 11:00)
- Breakfast: Sleep in, then have a bowl of Ningxia-style lamb offal soup with fried dough cakes.
- Packing (Important): Since you are staying in the desert tonight, pack a small backpack with essential toiletries, a change of clothes, photography gear (tripod, camera), and a thick jacket. Leave your large suitcases in the rental car to avoid dragging them through the sand.
2. Entering the Sandbox (11:00 - 14:00)
- Route: Zhongwei City ➔ Edge of the Tengger Desert (designated hardened parking lot).
- Driving Rule: Absolutely do not attempt to drive the rental SUV into any unpaved sand! Once at the parking lot, lock the car, take your small bag, and transfer to the camp's exclusive off-road shuttle to enter the desert.
3. Desert Surfing & Play (14:00 - 18:00)
- Core Experience: After settling in, try desert UTV off-roading, sandboarding, or camel riding. The sand in the Tengger Desert is extremely fine, and the afternoon sun creates high-contrast, geometric shadows on the dunes.
4. Wilderness Dinner & Stargazing (After 19:00)
- Dinner: Desert camps usually provide a bonfire BBQ or a whole roasted lamb feast. Dining in the endless sea of sand is an incredible experience.
- Ultimate Visual Experience (Stargazing):
- After 10 PM, lights around the camp will dim. Walk to the top of a dune away from the camp's light sources.
- Due to the lack of urban light pollution and the extremely dry climate, the night sky is incredibly clear. In the second half of the night in mid-May (usually around 1 AM), you can clearly see the Milky Way's core stretching across the sky.
- Photography Guide:
- Mount your camera on a sturdy tripod. If on a dune, hang a weight (like a water bottle) from the tripod to prevent vibration from the wind.
- Settings: Use a wide-angle, fast-aperture lens (f/1.8 or f/2.8), ISO 3200-6400, shutter speed 15-25 seconds (to avoid star trails).
- Use a flashlight or phone to provide fill light for silhouettes of people against the Milky Way.
5. Accommodation
- Base: Tengger Desert High-end Stargazing Camp (e.g., Moroccan tents or panoramic glass rooms).
- Night Protection: Desert temperatures can fluctuate by over 15 degrees between day and night. Wear a windbreaker or light down jacket after dark. Ensure the AC or electric blanket in your tent is working.
🗓️ Day 7 (May 15): Checking in at Route 66, meeting old friends in Yinchuan
1. Desert Sunrise & Leaving the Sandbox (07:00 - 10:00)
- Morning Experience: If you didn't stay up too late for stargazing, climbing a high dune around 7 AM for sunrise is highly recommended. The morning light in the desert is soft and creates perfect light-and-shadow boundaries on the sand ridges.
- Check-out: Enjoy breakfast at the camp, then take the off-road shuttle back to the parking lot to retrieve your rental car.
2. Wild Yellow River: Zhongwei Route 66 (10:30 - 13:00)
- Route: Parking lot ➔ Zhongwei Route 66 (Daliushu Panorama Line, approx. 40 km, ~1 hour drive).
- Core Visual: This road runs between the Yellow River and black Gobi mountains, with dramatic elevation changes—a rugged aesthetic unique to the Northwest.
- Photography Warning: This is a popular spot. Do not sit in the middle of the road for "road trip photos." Park in designated viewing areas and use a telephoto lens from a safe spot on the side of the road to compress the scene and achieve the same sense of depth.
3. Drive to Yinchuan (13:00 - 17:00)
- Lunch: Grab a bowl of Zhongwei Haozi noodles or a quick meal at a service area.
- Route: Zhongwei ➔ Jingzang Expressway (G6) ➔ Yinchuan City (approx. 200 km, ~2.5 hour drive). The road conditions are excellent; let CarPlay handle navigation and play relaxing road trip music.
- Arrival: Arrive in Yinchuan, the capital of Ningxia, in the afternoon. The "driver and planner" role officially transfers to your local friend.
4. Dinner & Accommodation (After 18:00)
- Dinner Recommendation: Reuniting with an old friend calls for the most local food. Besides hand-grabbed lamb, highly recommend Ningxia's unique Lakhuhu (a spicy, thick, fragrant hot pot base made with chili and spices—unique and flavorful) or grilled lamb kidneys and beef pies at Huaiyuan Night Market.
- Accommodation: Yinchuan City. Recommended high-star hotels near Jianfa Dayue City or Yuehai Bay Business District (e.g., Marriott Yinchuan, Yuehai Hotel), where commercial facilities are very mature.
🗓️ Day 8 (May 16): Historical echoes under Helan Mountain, immersive local tour
Today is a day where you don't need to plan anything. Turn off the navigation, follow your friend's lead, and enjoy the relaxation of being a passenger.
1. Breakfast Experience (09:00 - 10:00)
- Recommendation: Experience a hardcore Yinchuan breakfast—Wuzhong Morning Tea. It's more than just eight-treasure tea; it includes beef noodles, various pastries, and cold dishes—a high-density intake of carbs and protein.
*2. Visual Collision of History & Wilderness (10:30 - 17:00) Since the itinerary is friend-led, here are three options with Northwest characteristics to mix and match:*
- Option A (Historical Sites): Western Xia Tombs
- Loess ruins standing at the foot of Helan Mountain. The endless wilderness and crumbling rammed-earth tombs exude a strong sense of historical fate and desolate geometric beauty in the Northwest wind.
- Option B (Ancient Civilization): Helan Mountain Rock Art
- Walk through the rugged Helan Mountains to find totems carved into rocks by ancient nomadic peoples. It's also a great place to spot "rock sheep," a second-class protected animal, leaping across the cliffs.
- Option C (Pop Culture): Zhenbeipu Western Film Studio
- If you like movies, this is the filming location for "A Chinese Odyssey" and "Red Sorghum." Though man-made, it's perfect for shooting Northwest wasteland-style portraits.
3. Sunset at Lanshan Park & Farewell Dinner (17:30 - 21:00)
- Evening Recommendation: Head to Lanshan Park before sunset. There is a massive building modeled after the Roman Colosseum. Watching the sun slowly sink behind Helan Mountain with the shimmering Yuehai Lake in the foreground is the perfect visual finale.
- Dinner: Enjoy one last lamb feast or find a nice craft beer bar to catch up with your friend.
🗓️ Day 9 (May 17): Returning home, closing the loop
1. Final Prep & Departure (Based on flight time)
- Have a relaxed breakfast, check all luggage—especially the photography gear, memory cards, and charging cables you packed separately—to ensure nothing is left behind.
- It is recommended to leave for Yinchuan Hedong International Airport 2.5 hours in advance (approx. 40 min drive).
2. Returning the Car (Upon arrival at airport)
- Route: Yinchuan City ➔ Yinchuan Hedong International Airport Rental Center.
- Key Step (Closing the loop):
- Clear Personal Items: Remove all trash, check the glove box and door pockets, and unplug your CarPlay cable.
- Inspection: Inspect the car with the rental staff. Since you purchased full coverage with zero deductible, minor stone chips or mud are usually exempt, and the handover will be quick.
- Settlement: Confirm and pay the one-way rental fee for picking up in Xining and returning in Yinchuan.
3. Boarding & Trip Sleep Mode
- Check in and fly back to Qingdao with hundreds of GBs of high-res photos, video footage, and memories.
- This 1,750-kilometer journey across snow lines, salt lake mirrors, and starry nights in the Northwest is now perfectly complete.
🛠️ Defensive Driving Guide & Underlying Logic for Beginners
- Resource Allocation (One-way Rental Fee): Renting in Xining and returning in Yinchuan will incur a one-way fee. This is a "spatial transfer cost" and should be factored into your total budget when booking on comparison platforms.
- Dust & Optical Protection: The Northwest is windy, dusty, and has intense UV rays. You must carry high-quality polarized sunglasses to eliminate visual fatigue caused by flare; protect electronic devices (cameras, drones) from fine sand.
- Data Redundancy (Offline Maps): Cellular networks will cut out completely when crossing the Qilian Mountains and going deep into the Tengger Desert. Before leaving, you must cache high-precision offline map packages for Qinghai, Gansu, and Ningxia locally on your phone.
- Temperature Management System: May in the Northwest is typically "wearing fur coats in the morning and silk in the afternoon." Desert temperatures fluctuate wildly; pack windbreakers or light down jackets and use "onion-style" layering to adjust dynamically.
